Dadaism

Europe, 1916-1924
Dada was a protest by a group of European artists against World War I, bourgeois society, and the conservativism of traditional thought. DADA was "anti" everything an to art, sense, tradition, modern life and war. It has even been called "deliberately absurd" by some.

Artist(s): Jean Arp, Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamp, Hugo Ball, Tristan Tzara, and Man Ray.

Cubism

Between 1908 and 1912
Cubism was collaboration between Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Their main influences are said to have been Tribal Art and the work of Paul Cezanne. The movement itself began an immense creative explosion which resonated through all of 20th century art. The key concept underlying Cubism is that the essence of an object can only be captured by showing it from multiple points of view simultaneously.
